The Project
Every great transformation starts with seeing the potential in what’s already there. In this project, the existing timber front door had become weathered over time. While still structurally sound, the finish had dulled and no longer complemented the character of the home.
Rather than replacing the door, the aim was to restore and elevate it using careful preparation, the right products and a timeless colour choice.
By taking the time to prepare the surface properly before painting, the finished door not only looks beautiful but is also protected against everyday wear and the Irish weather.

- Medium and fine grit sanding pads
- Dust brush or cloth
- Masking tape
- Protective sheets
- Angled paint brush
- Mini roller and sleeve
- Paint tray and liner
How We Did It
Day One: Preparation
As with any exterior painting project, preparation is the key to achieving a professional finish.
The door furniture is removed where possible, while any surrounding areas are carefully masked and protected.
The entire door is then sanded to remove any loose paint, smooth out imperfections and provide a surface the new coating can properly bond to. Any dust is thoroughly removed before moving on.
Once the surface is clean and dry, a full coat of Fleetwood Bloxx-It Primer is applied. This creates the ideal base for painting, improving adhesion and helping to achieve a more even, longer-lasting finish.
The primer is then left to dry fully before painting begins.
Day Two: Painting & Finishing Touches
With the preparation complete, it’s time for the transformation.
Two coats of Fleetwood Advanced Satinwood in Rivers Reed are carefully applied using a combination of a brush and mini roller. Working methodically, the mouldings, recessed panels and edges are painted first before finishing the larger flat areas to achieve a smooth, even finish.
Allowing adequate drying time between coats helps create the rich, flawless finish that gives the project its professional appearance.
