72% of Irish women are now taking on DIY projects

DIY is no longer seen as something reserved for professionals or weekend hobbyists. Across Ireland, more women are confidently taking the lead when it comes to decorating and improving their homes.

New research commissioned by Fleetwood and conducted by Opinions shows that 72% of adult women in Ireland have carried out DIY or home improvement tasks in the past year. Even more telling is that 52% have taken on multiple projects, suggesting that DIY is becoming a regular part of how people maintain and refresh their homes.

A growing confidence in home improvement

The research highlights a wider shift in how home improvement is approached. Women are increasingly leading decisions around colour, design and project management within their homes.

Several factors appear to be driving this change. Online tutorials, social media inspiration and accessible advice have made DIY more approachable than ever. At the same time, the rising cost of professional call-outs has encouraged many people to try projects themselves.

The result is a new wave of confident decorators who are discovering just how achievable many home updates can be.

Fleetwood’s Weekend Projects

In response to this shift, Fleetwood has launched Weekend Projects which is a campaign designed to help people transform spaces quickly and confidently.

The concept is simple:

One weekend. One space. One transformation.

Each project is designed to fit realistically into a weekend schedule, with clear steps and guidance along the way.

Weekend Projects includes:

  • Step-by-step video tutorials

  • Simple shopping lists

  • Practical decorating advice

  • Inspiration for achievable home updates

The goal is to make decorating feel accessible to everyone.

Helping People Get Started

DIY ambassador Aileen Hogan, who is supporting the Weekend Projects campaign, believes confidence is often the biggest barrier.

“When it comes to DIY, particularly for women who may not have been encouraged to try it before, I see the biggest barriers being a lack of confidence and not knowing exactly where to start. My goal is to show people that they absolutely can do it.”

By teaching the basics and showing how achievable projects can be, Weekend Projects aims to help more people take that first step.

Painting Is for Everyone

Fleetwood Marketing Manager Derek Byrne believes the research reflects a positive change happening across homes in Ireland.

“We’ve noticed more and more women getting involved in the redecoration process in recent years and it’s something we welcome. Painting is for everyone — it’s just about having the right tools and support along the way.”

With the right guidance, even small projects can create a big impact.

Small Projects, Big Results

Whether it’s brightening a hallway, refreshing woodwork or updating an entire room, many decorating projects can be completed in just a couple of days.

Weekend Projects is designed to show that a fresh look at home doesn’t need to be complicated, expensive or time-consuming.

Sometimes, all it takes is one weekend to transform a space with the right products.
