Creating an optimal learning environment is crucial for the development and well-being of young children. A primary school environment is the beginning of their educational journey, so their surroundings have to reflect the importance of that role. The choice of paint colours in primary schools plays a significant role in stimulating learning and fostering a positive atmosphere where young minds can grow and flourish.
When Bush Primary School in Dundalk approached us, we were happy to work with them to create a unique and stimulating environment where young children would feel safe, secure, and inspired. Fleetwood Paints’ team of expert interior designers carefully selected colours proven to support learning in children that also align with the school’s existing identity. By considering factors such as colour psychology, the specific needs of children with learning difficulties or autism, and promoting air quality, Fleetwood Paints actively assisted Bush Primary School to create an environment for educational growth.
The use of primary colours in educational settings has long been recognised for its impact on children’s cognitive development. Fleetwood Paints understands this concept and incorporates bright colours into our paint collections. Primary colours like red, blue, and yellow are known to stimulate creativity, enhance focus, and promote a sense of vitality. At Bush Primary School, incorporating these colours into classroom walls and common areas helped to create an engaging and energetic atmosphere that fosters learning.
As with all of our collaborations, we approached our partnership with Bush Primary School as a bespoke project. Fleetwood Paints prides itself on its team of trained interior designers who possess the expertise to choose colours based on extensive research and understanding of child psychology. They recognise that not all children have the same needs and that individual differences should be considered. For instance, children with learning difficulties or autism may have specific sensitivities to certain colours. When drawing up the colour palette for Bush Primary School, Fleetwood Paints’ interior designers took these factors into account, tailoring the colour choices to create a supportive environment for all students. When it comes to children with autism, colour choices need to be approached with extra care. Some individuals may experience sensory sensitivities, making certain colours overwhelming or distracting. Fleetwood Paints’ interior designers worked closely with Bush Primary School’s team and therapists to select calming colours that promote focus and reduce sensory overload. Included in the colour collection were soft pastels, gentle greens, and warm neutrals, creating a peaceful and soothing atmosphere that supports both learning and emotional well-being.
As well as aesthetic and visual considerations, we also needed to include paints that promote physical well-being. Young children can be sensitive to overpowering smells, so we needed to consider using paints with ultra-low odour and low VOC levels. We recommended the use of Fleetwood Air + Eco Spec Washable Matt, formulated with a low-odour and low-VOC content. Fleetwood Air + Eco Spec Washable Matt also incorporates unique air purifying technology. This innovative feature helps combat potentially harmful compounds in the air, such as formaldehyde, which can be found in some building materials. The use of Fleetwood Paints in Irish primary schools like Bush Primary School not only enhances the learning environment but also contributes to a healthier and safer atmosphere for young students and staff. With Fleetwood Paints, primary schools like Bush Primary School can create vibrant, engaging, and healthy spaces that support the educational growth and well-being of all young learners.
