Museums face a myriad of complex issues. These public spaces are not only custodians of precious historical artefacts, but they also have to deal with very high traffic levels all year round. Add to this the fact that they are often housed in heritage buildings that require a very different approach to maintenance and coatings and you have a very challenging brief.
Fortunately, when the prestigious National Museum of Ireland approached Fleetwood Paints, we were more than ready to accept that challenge. Our primary guideline from the client was to deliver a breathable solution for both interior and exterior render which would adhere to and protect the substrate. The key here was to ensure the coatings were breathable. Non-breathable coatings would cause substantial issues, deterioration of the internal and external substrates, and an increased and ultimately costly maintenance cycle.
A layered approach
Fleetwood Paints, in association with our partners RD Coatings, came up with a three-part system for this problem. RD Elastoflex Breathable Elastomeric masonry paint was the heart of this system. This specialist exterior coating is designed to create a defensive yet breathable layer to protect concrete, walls and facades. The high elasticity of the paint (600%) as well as its vapour-permeability delivers outstanding protection against erosion, carbonation and water infiltration while still letting the building ‘breathe’. RD Unifix Clear Sealer was used to produce an impregnation layer to fix and seal the surface prior to painting. This water-based, fast-drying coating is specifically used on porous substrates including concrete, and while it prevents powdering and deterioration of the surface, it also allows it to breathe. Because of the nature of the building and its national and international importance, only the best quality products were used to achieve the desired finish. In partnership with RD Coatings, Fleetwood delivered a system that ensured the museum’s exterior was protected and created a positive visual impact on visitors for years to come.
