Weekend Project: Refresh a Baby’s Cot

Safely Restore Your Cot with Toy-Safe Paint

Have a baby cot that needs a little love? Whether you’re prepping for a new arrival or just want to breathe new life into your nursery, this simple weekend project is the perfect way to refresh a tired cot — all while ensuring safety and style. Using toy-safe paint and a few easy steps, you can transform your cot into a nursery showstopper.

Why Refresh Your Cot?

Baby furniture goes through a lot — scratches, wear, and tear can all take a toll over time. Rather than buying new, this project helps you restore and personalise your cot using safe, durable paint that’s suitable for your little one.

What You’ll Need:

  • Methylated spirits and water mix (50/50)

  • 180–220 grit sandpaper or sanding sponge

  • Fleetwood Water Based Pure Grip Primer

  • Fleetwood Advanced

  • Microfibre roller and brush

  • Clean cloths

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Prep and Clean

Start by taking the cot apart and giving all the woodwork a thorough clean. Mix 50/50 methylated spirits and water in a spray bottle, spray onto the wood, and wipe clean with a dry cloth. This removes old residues and gives you a clean surface to work with.

2. Scuff Sanding

Once clean, scuff sand all wood surfaces with 180–220 grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge. This lightly abrades the surface, helping the primer and paint adhere properly for a long-lasting finish.

3. Prime for Perfection

Apply a coat of Fleetwood Water Based Pure Grip Primer using a 4″ microfibre roller for smooth application. This ensures even coverage and a professional-looking base. Allow the primer to dry completely.

4. Paint Like a Pro

Top it all off with two coats of Fleetwood Advanced Satinwood in your chosen colour — warm grey is a lovely neutral tone as shown in the project. Use a roller and a light hand for best results. Not only is the paint stylish, but it’s also certified toy-safe, giving you peace of mind.

A beautifully refreshed cot doesn’t just look great — it tells a story of care, creativity, and sustainability. So roll up those sleeves, grab a roller, and give your nursery that perfect finishing touch.
