Looking to update your bedroom without committing to a full renovation? This weekend project, completed by Fleetwood brand ambassador Aileen Hogan of Shabby.ie alongside interior designer Patricia Wakely, shows how a thoughtful combination of tonal paint and simple board and batten panelling can completely transform the feel of a space.
Designed as a two-person project, it’s a practical, achievable update that can be completed over a single weekend without major disruption.
Rather than replacing everything, this approach focuses on working with what’s already there, enhancing existing furniture, introducing texture through panelling, and layering colour to create depth and softness. The result is a bedroom that feels more considered, more contemporary, and far more inviting.
Best of all, it delivers maximum impact with minimal effort, making it an ideal weekend project for anyone looking to refresh their space.
Every good transformation starts with a solid base. In this case, the bedroom already had built-in timber wardrobes, neutral walls and a traditional pine bed.
While practical, the space lacked contrast and cohesion. The wardrobes felt heavy, the walls were flat, and there was no real focal point in the room.
The aim of this project was to create a more balanced and modern look by introducing structure through panelling and tying everything together with a carefully chosen colour palette.
By adding a panelled feature wall behind the bed and extending that detail onto the wardrobes, the room begins to feel more architectural, less like a standard bedroom, and more like a designed space.
Colour plays a central role in this transformation, with a fresh, clean palette designed to brighten the space while adding subtle depth.
Grey Nuance is used on the walls to create a soft, airy backdrop. It’s a light, contemporary greyish green that keeps the room feeling open and calm, without appearing flat.
Designer White is applied to the woodwork, the panelled feature wall behind the bed, and the bedframe itself. This crisp white lifts the entire space, highlighting the panelling detail and giving the room a more refined, architectural feel.
Together, these tones create a bright, layered look that feels fresh, modern and easy to live with, ideal for a bedroom setting where simplicity and clarity are key.
To achieve a durable, high-quality finish, using the right products is key.
Alongside paint, you’ll also need MDF panelling (cut to size), adhesive, caulk, sandpaper, masking tape and protective coverings.
Day One: Panelling & Preparation
The first stage of the project focuses on building the foundation for the transformation. Before any work begins, the room is cleared and carpet protection film is applied to safeguard the flooring and keep the space clean throughout the process.
Panelling is then installed behind the bed to create a feature wall. Careful measuring and layout planning ensures the battens are evenly spaced and aligned, which is key to achieving a professional finish. Once fixed in place using grab adhesive, the structure of the room immediately begins to change.
To create a cohesive look, the same panelling detail is carried onto the wardrobes. This step is particularly effective, as it transforms standard fitted units into something that feels more bespoke and integrated into the overall design.
With the panelling in place, attention turns to preparation. The existing pine bed is lightly sanded to remove any sheen and create a surface that will properly accept paint.
All surfaces, including the panelling, wardrobes and bed, are then primed using Bloxx-It. This step is crucial for ensuring consistent coverage and long-term durability, particularly when working with MDF and previously finished timber.
Once primed, everything is left to dry fully before moving on to painting.
Day Two: Painting & Finishing Touches
With the preparation complete, the focus shifts to bringing the space to life through colour.
The walls are painted first using Easyclean Washable Matt in Grey Nuance. Two coats provide a smooth, even finish that creates a calm and consistent backdrop for the rest of the room.
Next, the bed is painted using Advanced Satinwood in Designer White. The subtle sheen of this finish helps to lift the timber, giving it a more refined look while also providing durability for everyday use.
The wardrobes and panelling are then painted, continuing the tonal scheme across the room. Grey Nuance is used on the wardrobes to blend them seamlessly into the space, while Designer White is applied to the feature wall to highlight the panelling and add depth.
Taking care around edges and between panels is key here, these details make all the difference in achieving a clean, professional result.
Once all painting is complete, the room is left to dry fully before moving on to the final stage.
The finishing touches are what bring the entire project together.
New hardware is fitted to the wardrobes, instantly updating their look and adding a subtle design detail. This small change has a surprisingly big impact, helping the wardrobes feel more contemporary.
The bed is then styled with fresh linens, cushions and a bedspread, introducing softness and texture to balance the structured panelling.
Wall-mounted bedside lights (often referred to as wall lights or sconces) are added to frame the bed and enhance the feature wall. These not only provide practical lighting, but also contribute to the overall atmosphere of the room.
Together, these elements complete the transformation, turning a simple paint and panelling project into a fully finished space.
The finished bedroom feels calm, layered and cohesive.
The panelled wall creates a strong focal point, while the tonal colour palette brings a sense of balance and softness throughout the space. The wardrobes now feel integrated rather than separate, and the updated bed ties everything together.
By focusing on detail, preparation and a considered use of colour, this project shows how a relatively simple update can deliver a significant transformation.
