How to paint an exterior wall

A step-by-step guide for Irish homes

If you’re planning to refresh your home this season, getting the preparation and application right is what makes the difference between a finish that lasts and one that doesn’t.

Why your exterior paint matters

Fleetwood Weather Clad® is designed specifically for Irish conditions. It’s built to handle:

  • Heavy rain and wind exposure
  • Temperature changes
  • UV fading
  • Coastal air
  • Rough and pebble dash surfaces

It delivers strong coverage and long-lasting colour, meaning fewer repaints and less maintenance over time.

Real homes, real results

For many homeowners, repainting the exterior isn’t just about appearance, it’s about protecting the home long term.

Step-by-step: Painting an exterior wall

Step 1: Clean the surface

Start with a clean base.

Remove dirt, dust and any loose or flaking paint. If there’s mould, algae or mildew present, treat it using Fleetwood Fungicidal Wash and allow the wall to dry fully before painting

.

Step 2: Repair and prime

Check the surface before painting.

Fill cracks and holes to create a smooth, even finish. If areas are powdery or unstable, seal them with Fleetwood Stabilising Primer to ensure proper adhesion.

Step 3: Protect windows and fixtures

Take time to protect surrounding areas.

Use masking tape and coverings for:

  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Sills
  • Outdoor fittings

A careful setup makes the final finish much cleaner.

Step 4: Apply your paint

Once everything is prepped, you’re ready to paint.

In most cases:

  • Two coats are enough
  • A third coat may be needed for strong colour changes

Use a masonry roller for large areas and a brush for edges and detail work.
